After thousands of votes and a season full of memories, Shawn Kerr and Sarah Wayson are the WETM-18 Sports Spring M.V.P. award winners.
Kerr, a senior at Arkport, led the Blue Jays to the school's first ever State Championship in baseball. He starred both at the plate and on the pitching mound, batting .500 with more than 70 RBI and a .598 on-base percentage. On the hill, Kerr put up a 1.62 ERA with 111 strikeouts against just 20 walks.
Wayson is only a sophomore, which makes her dominance even more eye-catching. She struck out 255 batters this season in 25 games - better than 10 per outing - winning 21 times. Her ERA was a miniscule 0.73 in the regular season. Tioga lost in the state finals.
Corning West's Austin Rose and Quincy Lewis won the fan voting, but Kerr and Wayson ended up with the overall edge. Kerr was the #1 choice on both Steve Vesey and Emerson Lotzia's ballots. Wayson finished no lower than second on all three.
Only two more awards are still waiting to be handed out this school year. Tuesday at 6pm, WETM-18 Sports will unveil the female Athlete of the Year. The male winner will be named Wednesday.
