Under the Lights

We all have a handful of memories (at least) from growing up, that once we tap into that part of our brain, we're instantly transported back in time.  For me, several of those involve high school football.

Strangely enough, one of the strongest memories I have from that time really has nothing to do with playing the game itself.  I vividly recall stretching on the field before my first-ever home varsity football game as a starter.  Looking up, the lights were already on in the stadium, beaming down... overcast sky in the background.  Fans were shuffling in with their seat cushions and assorted cheering devices (cowbells seemed to be a popular choice at the time).  It was one of those simple moments I'll never forget.

There's just something special about playing Friday night football under the lights.  I had a TON of trouble getting into "game mode" for a rare Saturday game.  But once those lights came on, it was like someone flipped a switch deep within my soul.  Strange, but that's how I rolled.

I have other memories from the field... hydroplaning after a sack in Freshman ball against McDonald... my first varsity sack against Springfield - right on that hideous orange tiger paw in the middle of the field... the first play of my first varsity game as a sophomore, lighting up some puny cornerback on a sweep to the left... the heartbreaking upset loss to Mineral Ridge that kept us out of the playoffs.

But more than anything, I remember those lights.  Even after I was done playing, there's just something different about walking into that illuminated stadium.  There's a unique energy that comes with it... and that, my friends, is why Friday night can't get here soon enough.
