8 cups Rice Krispies
3 tbsp. butter or alternative
10 oz. mini marshmallows (1 package)
2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
1/3 cup pumpkin, not pie mix
16 drops orange food coloring(12 drops yellow,4 drops red)
Green apple Twizzlers, stem garnish
4 ea.3-4 oz. Pyrex rounded custard cups
Spray release

Basic Krispie Treat Preparation

Take four of your apple twizzlers and wrap each one around the round handle of a wooden spoon . Place the twizzlers in the freezer while you complete the balance of the recipe. This will become the pumpkin stems for presentation.

Take your four custard cups and line them with plastic wrap. Spray the lined custard cups with release and remove any excess spray with a paper towel. Set aside and start the Rice Krispie procedure.

In a large sauce pan or Dutch oven, melt the butter or alternative over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until melted completely. Next, add the pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin, and food coloring. Continue to stir over low heat until all of the ingredients are well combined and a solid orange color is present.

Remove the hot mixture from the heat and quickly stir in the Rice Krispies. Continue to mix until all of the cereal is well coated. Using a large spoon, fill each of the lined custard cups to capacity. Gently press the mixture into the cups with the spoon to insure a solid and complete fill. Carefully, press the filled cups together, cereal to cereal, and place in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours.

Remove the chilled cups from the refrigerator and carefully take the cups and plastic wrap off of the set treats. Place each treat on a display piece. Using a small paring knife,  cut a small “X” in the top center of each treat. Penetrate the treat to a depth of about ½”. Now, insert the round handle of a wooden spoon to make an insertion whole. Again, only insert the spoon to a depth of ½”. Now, insert the twisted twizzler into the whole to form the stem.

At this point you can use the Krispie pumpkin treat as a display piece, to be eaten later, or have the kids turn them into traditional decorated jack-o-lanterns.
