There are many career options in the television industry. From being a news reporter, anchor, meteorologist, or sportscaster in front of the camera, to the many positions behind the scenes to get the news and other programming "on the air", WETM has a wide range of choices. At WETM, we offer positions in the area of advertising sales, commercial producers, newscast directors, master control operators, web site designers, IT specialists and broadcast engineers. In our busy newsroom, we have news producers, news videographers, video editors, and assignment editors. Television stations also feature careers in accounting, data entry/commercial scheduling, public relations and more.
There truly isn't one ideal track of education you can take to prepare for a career in television. For a news reporting career, coursework in journalism, communications, and government would be ideal. On-air meteorologists will usually have a college degree in Atmospheric Science and should have some coursework in television production/presentation, and computer science. For newscast directors and commercial producers, education and experience with graphics and computers would be most helpful. For advertising account executives, a background in marketing and prior outside sales experience would be good preparation. Your best bet would be to identify a career in television that interests you the most, then prepare yourself accordingly.
Good communication and computer skills are required for every position at WETM. You must have outstanding written and oral communication skills. Coursework in Media Communications at the college, technical school, and/or high school level would greatly improve your chances for any job in television.
Good luck as you prepare for your exciting career in television!!!
