I’m going to try to have one new column a week, however, we’re off to a rocky start because I’ve had the most fantastic week, and haven‘t had one bit of interest in writing “no stinkin’ column”!
The weather has been wonderful, don’t you agree?
Take a walk around town. Check out the river. Or the woods at
Tanglewood or
Spencer Crest nature centers.
We live in a truly gorgeous section of New York State.
But it’s not just the weather that’s got me over the moon.
On Sunday, May 17, a friend and I held a drag show, silent auction and wine tasting benefit for the Chemung County Humane Society and S.P.C.A. at the Starlite Room in Elmira.
We received fantastic donations from over 20 local businesses and individuals.
It was a huge success. The venue was packed with animal lovers who forked over $2,300 for the animal shelter.
I was so impressed by how happy and positive everybody was. From the Starlite Room’s staff to the performers to the audience, everyone seemed to be having a blast. It was inspiring.
In these tough economic times, it’s important to remember those who might be worse off than we are. Coming together to share a good time and help a good cause can buoy one’s own spirits in difficult times.
Please consider donating your time, talent, money - whatever you can afford - to help a charity of your choice.
In the meantime, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this Memorial weekend.
* Unleash your childhood, and check out the new editions at
Eldridge Park in Elmira. The park opens Saturday, May 23 at noon.
* Get a little exercise while enjoying the views at
Watkins Glen State Park on Route 14. Or better yet, enjoy a tasty meal at one of the wineries along Seneca Lake.
* Head to
Ithaca for the Farmers’ Market at Steamboat Landing, off Route 13. The market is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. You’ll find fresh produce, fine arts and crafts, clothing, delicious food, pastries, wine, coffee. One of my favorite places to hang and people watch.
* Explore the northern tier at
Wellsboro’s second Geocaching Trail event, this weekend. Plug the coordinates into your GPS and meet fellow adventurers for a barbecue, gathering and other fun activities.
Whatever your pleasure, get out and about, and enjoy the beautiful Twin Tiers.
