I’ve mentioned it before and I’ll write it again - The Southern Tier is chock full of fabulous events for all types of party animals.
Here are just some of the exciting activities taking place throughout the area this weekend and beyond.

Fun Stuff to Do:
* Celebrate the legends of country at The Starlite Opry Show at 7 p.m. today (Aug. 14) at the Starlite Room on Lake Road in Elmira Heights. The vintage country music revue, presented by Broad Street Melodies, will celebrate the music of Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Bob Willis and the Texas Playboys, and others. Enjoy yummy food and drink at this posh lounge and eatery. Check out the link for more information on this show, and other upcoming events.

* This weekend, kick up your heels and celebrate the classic musical “Footloose,” presented by Running to Places, at 7 p.m. today (Aug. 14) and Saturday, Aug. 15, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16 at State Theatre in Ithaca. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for students and seniors.

* Spend a jazzy afternoon at the Michelob Twin Tiers Jazz Festival, from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 at Eldridge Park in Elmira. Hear performances from the Hugh Douglass Quartet, Joe Cavallaro’s Dixieland Band, and Nancy Kelly & Trio. Food and drink will be available. You can take a spin on the carousel, too. Be sure to bring your sunscreen because the weather‘s supposed to be hot and sunny. The concert is free, so it’s an affordable way to spend a day out in Elmira.

* A great way to honor the memory of the legendary Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics who died earlier this week, is to join Chemung ARC’s First Celebration Walk-Run-Fun Day, taking place Saturday, Aug. 15 at Horseheads’ Holding Point Recreation Complex. Registration for a walk and a run begins at 9 a.m. A “fun day” that includes face painting, a super soaker station, carnival games, and more, takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a concessions stand, and lots more at this new important event. Visit the Chemung ARC website for complete details.

* Learn about another culture at India Day, an annual Indian Festival, taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 in Centerway Square, downtown Corning. There will be entertainment that celebrates the culture of India, henna tattooing, tasty traditional Indian food, and more.

* Check out the Mr./Miss Chemung County Pageant and Benefit at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30 at the Starlite Room in Elmira. You’ll see an exciting drag pageant while helping out the American Red Cross and local food pantries. Admission is $5 and a can of food. Call (607) 733-3333 for more information.

Don’t want to leave the house? Check out what’s on the boob tube:
* VH1 continues its examination of groovy revolutionary moments in history with the rock documentary “Woodstock: Now & Then” at 9 p.m. today (Aug. 14). See the images and hear the music that defined a generation and changed popular culture forever. If you miss tonight’s broadcast, VH1 will re-air it throughout the weekend, and the History channel is also airing the doc. at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17.

* One of the best dramas on television, “Mad Men” premieres its third season at 10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16 on AMC. The show is about Manhattan ad men in the 1960s, and it rocks. Visit the website for information and to create your own “Mad Men” avatar. So cool.

* Foodies rejoice! Top Chef: Las Vegas kicks off at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19 on Bravo. This is the sixth season of the popular culinary competition series, which tests the cooking and mental mettle of up and coming chefs from around the country. This is one of the best reality competition shows, in my opinion. Check it out and let me know what you think.

* Don’t forget - “Project Runway” returns for a sixth season at 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 on Lifetime (Yes, it‘s on a new channel). You can’t beat the talented team of Tim Gunn, my favorite uptight fashionista, and svelte supermodel, Heidi Klum. I’m so glad this show is back!
