The most neglected component of exercise and perhaps the most necessary is stretching. Plain and simple. Whether you stretch before or after a workout session is still being debated.

Pre-streching is important but it is not always necessary, especially in well conditioned athletes. I can't believe I just said that...yes I can! A warm up is very important before an event such as exercise. Stretching is important all day long not just before you tackle a workout at the gym. You should make an attempt to stretch at least three times a day. The stretches do not have to be arduous and elaborate. They can be simple leg and calf stretches as well as arm and shoulder stretches complimented with light neck stretches to ease tension.

Don't get me wrong at least one of the three stretch sessions should be challenging. Often times it is best to have a partner to help you stretch. This way you won't short change yourself with a less than adequate range of motion. Good flexibility has helped more people with bad backs painful knees, tight shoulders and tension headaches than you would imagine. It's easy to do and it's readily available.

Stretching Tips:

*Begin stretching easy* Do Not hold your breath, this causes your muscles to tense up.
*Exhale into the stretch* Always return from a stretched position slow and easy.
*Stretching should* (sorry folks) have some discomfort....you'll live.
*10-15 minutes* or more if feasable would do for a good stretch session.
