Summer officially begins Sunday, June 21.
However, the summer social season is already ablaze with fun activities.
* Head to Dunn Field on Elmira’s southside to cheer on the
Elmira Pioneers as they face Allegany County
at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18. A little popcorn, a soda (or beer, if you’re old enough), and big lungs to “root, root root” for the home team are all you need for a guaranteed evening of fun. Visit the
Pioneers website for the season schedule, ticket prices, directions and more.
* Get healthy and say hello to your friends and neighbors at the
Wisner Farmers’ Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 18 in downtown Elmira. Check out the homegrown produce and pick up fixings for a tasty salad, inhale the perfume of fresh flowers, or pick up a quick lunch at one of the many food vendors representing popular local eateries. The market is held Thursdays throughout the summer.
- Don’t worry if you can’t make it Thursday, you'll get a second chance to stock up on fresh, local food at the
Eastside Farmers' Market, held
from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 19 on the west lawn of the Holiday Inn on East Water Street in Elmira. Lots of goodies, and a great way to kick off the weekend. The Eastside Farmers' Market takes place Fridays throughout the summer.
* Get into the summer spirit at
Big Flats Community Days, where you can enjoy carnival rides, a parade, fireworks, live entertainment, good eats and more.
BFCD runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, June 18 and
Friday, June 19;
and
from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 20. Visit the
website for the particulars.
* Chillax and enjoy the smooth sounds of
Top Shelf on the
Eldridge Summer Stage from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 19 at Eldridge Park in Elmira. Take a spin on one of the fastest carousels in the world, or board Jasper the Dragon, and tool around Eldridge lake. Visit
Eldridge Park's website for a schedule of events.
Head’s up!* Relax and revel in the natural beauty of the Chemung River at the first
River Music Fest from 6 to 9 p.m. June 26 (it‘s on a Friday) in Elmira. You’ll hear great music from delta blues musician Gerard Burke, folk singer Danny Maloney, and a surprise musical guest. So bring a blanket or lawn chairs, something to snack on, your camera, and even a musical instrument - if you play one - for an idyllic evening of entertainment along the river. Learn more at the
