The Summer's the Season, in the Twin Tiers
The Twin Tiers has something to offer for every season, however, the area really shines in summer.
Add to the gorgeous scenery the volume and variety of events, and the Twin Tiers is a pretty nifty little hot spot.
As temperatures rise, get ready for a slew of summer festivals where you can experience the diversity of this busy rural metropolis.
Get the fun started at
“Warm Up to Summer Music Festival,” from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at Mandell’s Restaurant, where you can rock out to great jams. Visit the Web site to get the scoop on who’s performing, admission and more.
The Northern Tier celebrates the
Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival, June 12 through 20, while the
Endless Mountain Music Festival will bring the hills alive with music July 31 through Aug. 16.
Downtown Elmira celebrates Italian heritage at Roundin’ Third’s annual
Italian Days on June 26. Enjoy live bands, homemade Italian cuisine and more.
Elmira’s Street Painting Festival, July 10 and 11, keeps getting bigger and better. Stroll through downtown Elmira and watch as artists transform asphalt to canvas before your eyes. Enjoy tasty local cuisine, Finger Lakes wines and much more at this creative community celebration.
Flavorful food and crafty treasures are back as farmers’ markets open across the region. A few of my faves include:
- Downtown Elmira’s
Wisner Market, open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 23
- Corning’s
Farmers’ Market, open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays through October
- Ithaca
Farmers’ Market at Steamboat Landing, open Saturdays and Sundays through fall. There are also weekday markets in Dewitt Park.
When summer gets really steamy, there are plenty of places to cool off.
Harris Hill, in Elmira, offers plenty of fun in the sun with an outdoor swimming pool, mini amusement park, Arcade, driving range and go-carts. Relax on a glider swing as glider planes soar out over Big Flats, or cool off at the
National Soaring Museum while learning about the “Soaring Capital of the World.”
Catch a cool lake breeze while having a blast at the
17th annual Waterfront Festival in Watkins Glen, June 18 and 19, the highlight of which is the Cardboard Regatta.
Or head down to the banks of the Chemung River on June 26 for some sweet tunes at
RiverFest 2010. Relax and vibe to music from Uncle Joe and the Rosebud Ramblers, and special guests, from 4 to 8:30 p.m.
Don’t miss the
Jamboozle Festival, starting at noon July 11 on the Summer Stage at Tag’s in Big Flats. Hear groovy jams from Umphrey’s McGee, Dark Star Orchestra, Donna the Buffalo, Tea Leaf Green, and Rusted Root surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.
Other popular summer events include,
Grassroots Festival,
Finger Lakes Wine Festival,
Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen,
Twin Tier Jazz Festival, and much more.
The Twin Tiers is truly bursting with fabulous events to keep you busy all summer long.
