In order for your brakes to work properly, you need the right kind and the right amount of brake fluid. There are three types of brake fluid: dot-3, dot-4 and silicon based dot-5. Never mix these grades. The type of brake fluid you should use is usually indicated on the master cylinder. Check the brake fluid every time you change the oil. If the fluid reservoir is see-through, checking the oil can be performed without removing the cover. If not, the cover must be removed, but do it carefully to avoid knocking dirt into the reservoir. The level should be about half an inch from the top. Some drop in fluid level over a period of time is normal. However, if you notice a frequent loss in fluid, you should have it checked by a professional as soon as possible. Fluid color can also indicate problems. If it's especially dark, it probably needs to be changed. Brake fluid should be changed every two years. For best results, consult a professional.
