Asthma is a real illness, not a psychological disease. While asthma is not caused by emotions, extreme emotions might trigger an asthma attack by causing the bronchial tubes to constrict, making it more difficult to breathe. Some studies suggest that sad emotions set the body up for an asthma attack, whereas happy emotions reduce the risk for possible attacks. Panic can also prevent an asthmatic from relaxing, which is important during an attack. Having asthma takes an emotional toll on the person inflicted and the family as well. For more information on how emotions can affect asthma, contact an allergist in your area.
