The most common cancers that attack men include cancer of the lung, skin,prostate gland, colon or rectum, and the testes. Ureteral (yoo-REET-er-uhl) cancer is less common, but still effects thousands of men each year. The ureter (yoo-REET-er) is one of two tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder through which urine passes. The causes of ureteral cancer are unknown, but the risks seem to be increased by tobacco use, certain industrial chemicals and dyes, saccharin, cyclamates (SIGH-kla-mates), chronic urinary tract infections, and hormones. The most common early warning sign is blood in the urine; other symptoms include urinary urgency, painful urination, abdominal or back pain, loss of weight and appetite, persistent fever, and anemia.
