A crown is a cap that's used in order to help restore or hold together a tooth that has been chipped or damaged. Crowns can also cover a large filling to help keep it in place, and they can protect a tooth recovering from a root canal. Multiple crowns are also used to hold a bridge in place. Crowns are available in a variety of materials including gold, porcelain, and even plastic. They are permanent fixtures, but crowns can occasionally come loose and need to be replaced. Making a crown requires several dental visits. At one appointment, the tooth to be crowned will be numbed and reshaped for the crown, and a mold of your tooth will be taken. A temporary crown is placed over the tooth until the custom crown is available. The final crown will be placed on the second appointment. Caring for your crown requires proper dental and gum care as instructed by your dentist. If you have damaged a tooth or want more information about crowns, consult a dentist in your area.
