Ingrown toenails and fungal infections are the two most common problems with toenails. By caring for your nails properly, you can probably avoid both. While some people are actually born with ingrown toenails, most people develop them through neglect. Nails should always be cut straight across, rather than curved to fit the shape of the toe. When trimming your nails, be careful not to cut them too short. This can irritate the sensitive skin beneath the nail. Pick shoes that have enough room for your toes; shoes that pinch toes together can cause the nails to press into the delicate skin. If necessary, inserting a tiny piece of cotton in the corner of the nail may cushion its effect on the toe. Fungus demands a moist location in which to grow. By washing your feet daily and drying them thoroughly, you don't give fungus a place to start. Commercial creams can stop fungus in the early stages, but if it doesn't clear up within a few weeks an authority in foot care should be consulted. For more information concerning nail care, contact a foot specialist in your area.
