It can be discouraging to find out that you or someone you love has diabetes (die-uh-BEE-tees), especially when you're told it's a lifelong condition. Although there's currently no cure for diabetes, the disease can be managed. In fact, type 2 diabetics can often control their disease without medication, by following a healthy diet, exercising, and losing weight. If you're a type 1 diabetic, you'll require daily insulin injections, but new methods of delivering this drug are in the works. External pumps are already available; someday, an internal pump may automatically supply your dose of insulin, or you may even be able to take a pill. Many diabetics can still lead a full, active life. For both types of diabetes, the risk of complications is dramatically reduced if you keep your blood sugar levels close to normal. This can be achieved by eating a balanced diet that's low in fat and high in fiber, limiting carbohydrates, and taking medication as directed. Being well-informed on your condition, and sharing your experiences with other diabetics can also help you cope with the disease.
