It can be discouraging to find out that you or someone you love has diabetes (die-uh-BEE-tees), especially when you're told it's a lifelong condition. Although there's currently no cure for diabetes, the disease can be managed. In fact, type 2 diabetics can often control their disease without medication, by following a healthy diet, exercising, and losing weight. If you're a type 1 diabetic, you'll require daily insulin injections, but new methods of delivering this drug are in the works. External pumps are already available; someday, an internal pump may automatically supply your dose of insulin, or you may even be able to take a pill. Many diabetics can still lead a full, active life. For both types of diabetes, the risk of complications is dramatically reduced if you keep your blood sugar levels close to normal. This can be achieved by eating a balanced diet that's low in fat and high in fiber, limiting carbohydrates, and taking medication as directed. Being well-informed on your condition, and sharing your experiences with other diabetics can also help you cope with the disease. For literature or support group information, you might contact the American Diabetes Association, or the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Or, consult a doctor in your area.
