Bursitis (burr-site-iss) is a condition in which the fluid-filled sack which cushions the bones in a joint becomes inflamed. It occurs in the joints of the knee, elbow, shoulder, and hip and is usually the result of trauma to the joint, pressure, excessive exercise, prolonged kneeling, or leaning on the elbow. To treat bursitis, apply an ice pack to help reduce the swelling and the pain. In most cases, the swelling will go down on its own. If it doesn't, your doctor may prescribe medication and wrap the inflamed joint with a bandage to keep it immobile. Cortisone shots may also be used to relieve the inflammation. To prevent recurrences of bursitis, warm up properly before exercising, use protective gear where appropriate, make sure your equipment fits properly and is in good condition, and avoid exposure to the cold by wearing warm clothing. For more information concerning bursitis, contact your health care provider.
