It’s estimated that there are over 50,000 (fifty-thousand) licensed chiropractors in the United States, and the number is growing each year, but what kind of training does it take to become a chiropractor? To receive a degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic, or DC (D-C), you must complete at least two years of undergraduate education. In some states, however, a bachelor’s degree is required. You then enroll in a chiropractic college for four years of training on the human anatomy and the principles of chiropractic care. Most schools require that you have over 2,000 (two thousand) study hours of biological and clinical sciences, more than 1,000 (one thousand) hours of chiropractic science study, and at least 900 (nine hundred) hours of clinical practice and patient care from training and internships. You may also want to continue your studies after graduation in more specialized areas such as pediatrics, sports injuries, occupational health, or nutrition. Some chiropractors also take additional courses in other alternative healing remedies, such as acupuncture, or in the use of special equipment used in chiropractic practices. In some cases, you may be required to have a special certification, in addition to your degree, to use specific equipment in your practice. Chiropractors are licensed in all 50 states, and the District of Columbia, as well as many foreign countries. To maintain a license, and also treat members of certain health plans, you must complete the number of continuing education courses that your state requires.
