Chronic headaches can interfere with your daily activities, and you may find that taking traditional headache medicines don’t ease the pain. A chiropractor may be able to treat your chronic headaches in several different ways. First, adjustments to the back and neck may relieve tension on muscles and nerves that may be causing your headaches, especially if your headaches are caused by stress or clenching of the jaw. Stretches, exercise, or relaxation techniques may also be prescribed to loosen muscles. A chiropractor may also investigate the causes of your headaches to see if they’re caused by an undiagnosed food allergy or chemical sensitivity, or by a nutritional deficiency. He or she may suggest slight changes to your diet and nutritional supplements to help ease the pain. In some cases, chronic headaches can be made worse by dehydration, so a chiropractor may recommend drinking more water throughout the day. Many chronic headache sufferers have found relief through chiropractic care, but the results may not be apparent until a few weeks after you’ve started your treatment. Follow the chiropractor’s suggestions completely, and notify him or her if your pain becomes worse.
