Successful marriages take a great deal of work and compromise. When a marriages fails, it's often because the two parties don't make the compromises necessary to satisfy one another's needs. In many cases, recently married couples discover that they have different tastes, interests, and habits. In other cases, married couples seem to grow apart over a period of several years. As a result, regret and uncertainty begin to take hold, and couples become alienated from one another. However, the final blow to a marriage is generally dealt when communication begins to break down. Feelings of doubt can occur in even the most successful marriages, but they can only be effectively dealt with by establishing proper channels of communication. If two people are to work out their differences, they must first have a clear understanding of what those differences are. Although money problems, sexual tensions, or disputes over child rearing often lead to marital difficulties, divorce is almost always the result of a failure to communicate. This is why marital therapy tends to focus specifically on improving communication between couples. Therapists generally attempt to teach couples to recognize each other's role in the marriage, establish appropriate boundaries, and consider the needs and concerns of their partners.
