Having access to an intensive care unit for newborns is especially important for mothers experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, or when problems are known to be present in the fetus. These units offer sophisticated vital-sign monitoring systems, resuscitation drugs and equipment, and the services of pediatric specialists. When a baby is born prematurely, or is of low birthweight, the resources of a neo-natal I-C-U can increase the chance of survival. Low-birthweight babies tend to have poor temperature control, and may need to be kept warm in a special nursery, or an incubator. Keeping small babies warm helps them grow more rapidly. Others may be born with breathing problems; these infants can be placed on special mattresses that sound an alarm if breathing stops. The baby may require oxygen or a mechanical ventilator for breathing. When the infant has low blood sugar, a glucose (GLUE-coas) drip can be set up, or special techniques can be used to feed the baby milk, until ready to for breastfeeding. To find out more about neo-natal I-C-Us, or where the nearest one is in your city, consult a health care provider.
