Natural childbirth is a standard vaginal birth, where relaxation and breathing techniques are used to relieve pain, instead of medication. There are many natural childbirth methods taught through classes; Lamaze (luh-MAHZ)is currently the most popular method. The father or other labor partner learns how to support the mother physically and psychologically during the process of labor and delivery. Classes typically begin in the seventh month of pregnancy, and last around six weeks. In natural childbirth, couples should have a complete understanding of the different stages of labor and delivery, in order for couples to be actively involved in the birth process. While preparing for natural childbirth, the couple should also read up on procedures like cesarean (see-SAIR-ee-un) section and the use of epidurals (ep-ih-DUR-alz), just in case natural childbirth is not possible. Discuss with your health care provider whether natural childbirth would be right for you. If you decide to use this method, ask a doctor for recommendations concerning natural or prepared childbirth classes in your area.
