Ice damming can be a common occurance in cooler areas. It occurs when the heat from a vented roof melts snow during the winter. This moisture runs down the roof away from the vent and may refreeze as it cools. This may eventually form a dam for the melted snow and ice, pooling water on your roof. These pools can seep moisture under your shingles and cause leaks in your home. Ice damming may be prevented by making sure your home has sufficent insulation and ventilation. A properly insulated home can keep the snow from melting inconsistantly. Appropriate ventilation helps keep the melted snow from re-freezing and pooling water over the eves. Shoveling the snow off the roof may also be an effective prevention method; however, you can damage your shingles. A water-resistant membrane can also be installed underneath your shingles to increase roof protection and prevent leaking. For more information on ice damming, contact a roofing specialist.
