Founded in 1974, Chemung Valley Montessori School's modern facility sits on three partially wooded acres on Winters Road in Big Flats. Its middle school occupies a separate building nearby.
CMVS offers a fully-certified Montessori program for ages two through fourteen. CVMS is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and affiliated with the American Montessori Society.
The school follows the traditional Montessori curriculum, using Montessori materials and mixed-age classes. The philosphy of education is child-centered rather than the traditional teacher-centered approach, fostering development of personal creativity, independence and self-motivation. Montessori teachers impart information but they serve more as guides -- observing students' activities, monitoring their progress and directing their efforts toward maximum results.
Faculty members are full time, Montessori trained and certified. Most hold advanced degrees.
Currently the school has 175 students, age two through fourteen, and 32 employees.
