Town of Erwin, (NY) - A local movie theater is now closed.

The Crystal Cinema in the Town of Erwin is closed.

The theater was open for more than 25 years.

"Gibraltar Management" based in New York City is the owner of this plaza on Victory Highway.

They couldn't tell us the reason Crystal Cinema closed.

The Town of Erwin supervisor, Rita McCarthy says there are now 4 empty store fronts at the plaza.

"Gibraltar feels that gives them an opportunity to combine the store fronts and create a much bigger space and market it like what we would call a big box store."

It's unknown how many people worked at the theater.

McCarthy says the closing will have an impact on the local economy.

Business owner Sara McKay tells us she will miss the extra foot traffic the theater brought to the area.

"It's a shame because a lot of people like going there. People would stop after or before a matinee or come over and have a snack or something before they went so it was nice."

Ideally, McKay says she'd like to see another movie theater open up.
