ELMIRA - The Elmira man who's admitted to stabbing a woman forty times in the chest received the maximum sentence on Monday.
Lee Doane received the maximum sentence of 23 years to life in prison for stabbing Susan Mitchell in early July.
Doane arrived at the Chemung County Court for his sentencing in an orange jump suit and shackles. He says he thought Mitchell was trying to set him up, since he was on the run from police.
Family members found her body inside her home at 355 Center Street in Elmira.
Mitchell’s children say they are relieved one part of the ordeal is over.
“He robbed me of my mother, my brothers my sisters of our mom. We'll never get that back regardless of what happens,” says William Warner, victim’s son.
“Reporter: Do you have anything to say? Doane: No, not really. Reporter: Are you surprised by the sentence? Doane: No. It was a deal I made.”
Doane entered a plea deal for this sentence. The maximum sentence for murder is 25 years to life.
Doane’s attorney says Doane will not appeal.
