MANSFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA - Mother Nature has thrown plenty of curveballs at the Mountaineer baseball team already, but Mansfield is out to a 2-1 start in their very young season.
The new year could not have come sooner for the Mounties. Coach Hillson's team finished 2012 with a 14-35 record, including a 6-18 PSAC East mark. It was a taste that didn't sit well with anyone on the team, especially those who could do something about it, in 2013.
Everyone, from the coaching staff, to the players have felt a completely different energy surrounding the Mounties, through their first three games.
One major difference is Mansfield's balance on the diamond. In past seasons, the Mounties may have been heavy on the bats, or heavy on pitching. This time around, MU has peices to compliment one another, that will hopefully lead to wins.
On the mound, Mansfield is lead by left-handed ace, Joe Candelmo, The senior has already stepped into the leadership role, but when it's his turn in the rotation, he's not talking to any one.
The Mountaineers will have a six game Florida trip starting on Thursday, which should tell us a lot more about what to expect from Mansfield in 2013.
