HORSEHEADS - It was a historic day in Horseheads as a marker was unveiled that represented a part of the Chemung Canal built in the 1800’s.About 30 people came out for the unveiling of the historical sign.
This location was chosen because it was one of the most important areas of the canal.
It was the spot where a feeder canal carrying water from the Chemung River and the Chemung Canal met.
Organizers say the unveiling event took a lot of time and research to be made possible.
“I’m extremely please with it, that we got it done. And the committee has been talking about this for 5 years”, said Archie Kieffer of the Chemung County Historical Society.
The Chemung Canal was used from 1833-1878.
There are also still parts of the canal that are visible from where the new marker's location.
