ELMIRA—
Jennifer Fisher says she tried franticly Thursday afternoon to get through to her son at Fort Hood by phone. But she says the phone lines were jammed.
About 30 minutes later, she was finally able to get through to 20 year old Jim Rake.
Her son, who is from Gillett told her there were lots of announcements and sirens on the base. He also said there were building to building searches and the base was on lockdown.
Fisher says her son was about a mile away from where the shootings happened. She says she's fortunate he's safe.
"We are so happy but we can't help but think of the parents that aren't in our position, that their son or daughter isn't going to come home,” said Fisher.
Rake is an army I.T. specialist. He's a graduate of troy high school.
