While tourists may be cramming into downtown, Vancouverites are celebrating the games in the suburbs. On an unexpectedly sunny Sunday, I was amongst them, enjoying a weekend slightly different from the norm.
I first wandered along the seawall looking north, I noticed dark clouds over the mountains and crossed my fingers that snow was falling for the athletes. Plus, it was bright and sunny in town--- the best of both worlds. It didn't take long for me to find the crowds. Throngs of people gathered near Canada Place and the Olympic flame. Opting to head over to the north shore, I lined up to get on the seabus to see what was happening in the suburbs.
In Lonsdale Quay, the line to get back downtown was at least an hour long. I knew I'd be finding a different route home and not queuing! I jumped on a bus to Park Royal where I'd read about a Winter Festival. They probably should have changed the name to Spring Festival given the weather. Regardless, it was charming. A huge screen aired live sports coverage, while a skating rink provided family entertainment. I had a little laugh when I saw the “Warming Hut”, a place serving hot drinks for a cold day. But, it was closed because some people were wearing t-shirts!
I took the bus home with all locals. It's strange to me that the bus is one area that I have yet to see many tourists. In fact, I now think it's a way for me to escape the crowds!
Not much insight today, but I hope you enjoy the pictures.
I'm working on a post about some watercooler chatter here over a manual issued by the city. Stay tuned!
Until then,
