Elmira, (NY) - With unemployment rates at its highest in more than two decades, some charities are worried you will not give as much as in years past.

Although we're in a recession, some people say they'll still donate.

Kathy Kent retired and on a fixed income, donates to charity every holiday season.

Even in this economy, she says she'll still give.

"I myself will give and have too. I've been a regular for the local food pantry."

A report released by "Giving USA" shows last year's charitable giving was down 2% to $308 billion dollars, the first decline since 1987.

Analysts with "Charity Navigator", a national charity evaluator, report that giving will continue to be down this holiday season.

Major Chris Stephens from the Salvation Army said they're hopeful their Christmas fundraisers will meet their goals.

"Even though, the economy is tough and certainly people are out of work and people are shopping less, we still have to go out there and do our part."

Stephen Hughes from the United Way of the Southern Tier said, "The pace of our campaign is running faster than it has in 5 years we're coming up very close to the 3rd quarter mark to our goal, we've pushed over $3 million raised to date and we're optimistic the community will helps us get to the $4.5 million goal."

Tom Bruner from the Arctic League said, "Based on the willingness and the kindness of the people to support needy people in our community I have absolutely all the conviction in the world that we are going to receive this money to ensure all children have a merry Christmas."

The United Way of the Southern Tier's Campaign is underway.

On Thursday, the Arctic League started its campaign.

The Salvation Army will have an official kickoff of their kettle campaign on Friday November 20th.
