Watkins Glen, (NY) - This Sunday, a new law will take effect in the Empire State.
It means those of you who text behind the wheel of your car, better stop. The new law also means Schuyler County will no longer need theirs.
Sheriff Bill Yessman says the texting while driving ban in SchuylerCounty will expire on Sunday, when the statewide ban takes effect.
The new state law prohibits you from using all portable electronic devices behind the wheel including: text messaging, sending emails and looking at the internet.
"Right now, you can come into a surrounding area into SchuylerCounty and it's legal for where you're then a second later it's illegal. So I don't know if it will help but it's statewide and that will probably reduce it."
Under the state law, you can't get a ticket just for texting while driving.
Authorities first have to pull you over for another offense.
But if you were also texting and driving, they can give you a ticket for that too.
A ticket will cost you a $150 fine.
