Afghanistan/Colorado - A doctor rescued from captivity by American Special Forces will likely return home in a few days.
Dr. Dilip Joseph had been kidnapped in eastern Afghanistan last Wednesday on his way back from a medical clinic.
U.S. intelligence showed his life was in imminent danger so a U.S./Afghan Special Forces team was sent in to free him Saturday night.
At least six people were killed, according to the New York Times, including one U.S. Service member who died early Sunday morning.
“A hostage rescue mission is really, really dangerous and carries a very high risk,” said retired U.S. Marine Stephen Ganyard. “That the hostage, him or herself, could be injured or killed. So you need somebody at a very high level to say ‘I'm authorizing this mission.’”
Dr. Joseph is recovering at Bagram air base until he can return home to Colorado.
