NEW YORK (AP) — For the first time, the majority of the City Council will be made up of people of color.
Twenty-seven minorities won seats in Tuesday's election. There are a total of 51 seats on the council.
The shift reflects what's going on with the overall demographics of the city. Census estimates show that non-Hispanic whites make up only 35 percent of city residents. Hispanics are 28 percent.
Non-Hispanic blacks are at 24 percent, and non-Hispanic Asians are at 12 percent.
The new council members elected include the first Chinese-American to represent Chinatown, and the first black council member elected on Staten Island.
