BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) — Police in western New York say an Iraq War veteran whose body was found outside a video-rental store apparently died after falling down.
Batavia Detective Sgt. Patrick Corona says that autopsy results indicate that 27-year-old James Maher fell backwards and hit his head while he was walking Saturday evening. His body was found about 9:30 p.m.
Corona says investigators have not yet received the findings of a toxicology report.
An obituary in the Albany Times-Union said the Mechanicville resident was a patient at the VA Healthcare System Medical Center in Batavia, undergoing treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
The obituary said Maher joined the Army Reserves after high school and served 11 months in Iraq with the Army's 101st Armored Division.
