(AP) - New York - New York health officials say flu cases have been confirmed in more than half the state and they're encouraging people to get vaccinated.

They say the pace of infections is picking up, with cases reported in 47 counties and all of New York City.

Flu season typically begins in October and continues through May - peaking in late winter or early spring.

Last year, almost 1,200 people required hospitalization and one child died from the infection.  The flu spreads through coughing and sneezing and begins with a sudden fever, chills, and aches along with a cough or sore throat.
