BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - New York state has chosen CTB/McGraw-Hill to develop a new high school equivalency test to replace the GED that's been in use since World War II.
New York began looking for a new testing company last year after GED Testing Services announced plans to begin giving the GED on computer only and to double the price to $120.
Since New York law prohibits charging residents to take the exam, the state says it would have had to either double its test budget or cut in half the number of tests people take.
California-based CTB/McGraw-Hill's new $54 test will be called the Test Assessing Secondary Completion, or TASC. It will gradually move from paper-and-pencil to computer and also evolve to reflect the new Common Core learning standards adopted by most states.
