By John Kucko:

(Penfield, NY) NFL icon John Madden joined WROC-TV (Rochester) Sports Anchor John Kucko two days before Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis. The Washington Redskins would defeat the Buffalo Bills that year at the Metrodome 37-24. Madden's videogame was only three years old at the time. And three years after this interview, FOX-TV would become a player in the NFL televising game as Madden would leave CBS and join FOX in calling NFC action for the network. FOX's entry into the tv sports realm would signify a seismic change for the NFL's television revenues and it changed the tv business forever, both nationally and locally. A number of longtime CBS affiliates switched their allegiance to FOX, just in order to maintain the broadcasting of NFL action on their air.

Lombardi Trophy Facts

The Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy was first named to honor the former Green Bay Packers Coach/General Manager in 1971, when the game was still known as the AFL-NFL World Championship. It is considered to be the National Football League's most prestigious award. Traditionally, the NFL Commissioner presents the Trophy to the owner of the winning team on Super Bowl Sunday at a field ceremony in their honor.

Handcrafted by Tiffany & Co. and valued at $12,500, the Vince Lombardi Trophy depicts a football in kicking position that is made entirely of sterling silver. The words "Vince Lombardi Trophy" and the NFL official logo are engraved on the base of the award. The trophy itself stands 22 inches tall, weighs seven pounds and takes 72 man-hours to create.
