ROCHESTER - Austin Dwyer put on a show that will live long after Hornell football's run is over this year. The Red Raiders' tailback ran for 399 - a state playoff record - and four TD's in Hornell's impressive 49-7 win over Westhill.
Hornell handed off to Dwyer 10 times during its opening 11-play scoring drive. The tone was set.
Westhill briefly took a 7-6 lead, but the Red Raiders struck three more times - including a memorable 75-yard Dwyer run - giving Hornell a 28-7 halftime lead.
Dwyer broke off another 70+ yard TD run in the third quarter, effectively putting the game out of reach.
He came into the game needing 136 yards to set a new Section V single-season rushing mark. Dwyer accomplished that before the end of the first quarter.
Hornell moves on to play in its first-ever football state title game next weekend at the Carrier Dome. The game is set for a 4pm start on Sunday the 29th.
In the Class C semifinal, Chenango Forks fell to defending state champ Southwestern 21-0. The two teams combined for 382 yards, which is 17 less than Hornell's Dwyer gained by himself.
