All that optimism before the season is slowly slipping away for the Elmira Pioneers. Tuesday night was a sure sign of it. The team fired rookie head coach Ryan Giblin, replacing him with former Pioneer assistant coach Archie McNelis. The team also hired Joe McGhee to replace pitching coach Jeremy Gulich.
McNelis is no stranger to the program. He was Elmira's assistant coach from 2006 through 2008. McGhee played professionally for the Brockton Rox of the independent Can-Am League in 2007 and 2008.
Pio's General Manager, Hoffman Wolff, told 18-Sports Tuesday night that team was heading in the wrong direction and needed a spark. Elmira is currently 5-10 and tied for last place in the NYCBL's West Division. The Pioneers travel to Geneva Wednesday night before returning home on Thursday to face Hornell.
