All that rain at the U.S. Open last week made its way to Endicott Friday afternoon. A four hour rain-delay at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open has forced 24 of the 78 golfers to finish the 1st round early Saturday morning.
Fred Funk is your leader in the clubhouse after shooting an 8-under 64, his best round on the Champions Tour since the 2008 season opener in Hawaii. Behind him, is a three-way tie for 2nd at 6-under, including Elmira native Mike Hulbert who still has one hole to play in the 1st round. Jay Haas, who's playing for the first time at En-Joie Golf Club since 2001, is also at 6-under along with Lonnie Nielsen who birdied ten holes on Friday, but had 2 bogeys and a double bogey to go along with them.
Horseheads resident, Joey Sindelar, got off to a fast start but later cooled off. Sindelar birdied five of the first eight holes but finished up tied for 10th at 4-under par. Rochester's Jeff Sluman is right there with Joey after shooting a 68. Defending champions Eduardo Romero and R.W. Eaks are both at 3-under.
Players who still need to complete the 1st round of the Dick's Open will tee off at 7:30am Saturday morning. The 2nd round is set to start at 10:30am with players going off both the 1st and 10th tees.
