TIOGA, PA - Championship weekend began a little early tonight, with a pair of Northern Tier volleyball teams earning district championships. Towanda and Canton will both advance to next week's state tournament after dominant district wins.
Canton took care of Mansfield in the first match, winning 25-21, 25-22, 25-17. The Lady Warriors will play the District III winner next Tuesday at a site and time to be determined.
In the second match of the evening, Towanda sent Wellsboro home for the third straight year - 25-13, 25-16, 25-15. The duo of Alison Wickwire and Cornell Dougal led the Lady Black Knights. Towanda will play what amounts to a home game in the first round of states, taking on Holy Redeemer Tuesday night at 6pm at Wyalusing.
